Rita Dove was born in Akron, Ohio in 1952. She was the daughter of the first Black research chemist who, in the 1950s,
broke the race barrier in the tire industry. She was invited to the White House in 1970 as a Presidential Scholar, becoming
one of the most outstanding High School Graduates. She then went on to college attending the University of Miami, University
of Tübingen in Germany, and the University of Iowa. As Rita's life went on she won many awards that only renouned writers
receive.
In much of Rita's work you will notice she uses a lot of personifications and imagery Many of her poems seem like
a story, or reflect something that has happened in real life, not neccessarly hers. Many of her poems are sad in one way or
another, there is always something limiting true happiness. In many of these poems you will see similies and metephors being
used.
